Planning/Management of large enterprises in the past?

by aricwatson

I'm interested in the mechanics/theories (and "nuts and bolts") used to plan and manage large-scale enterprises in the past like Operation Overlord, the Apollo program, military operations, etc.

Today (at least in the tech world I'm familiar with) there are tons of terms/ystems like "agile", "Lean", "kanban", "waterfall". Many seem to originate in and evolve form the the Toyota Production System.

Obviously, history is filled with truly huge undertakings - successfully planned well before all these theories came about, not to mention before the IT resources we have today. I'd like to know what resources there are to study how these were actually planned, managed and executed.

I'm interested in all periods - really interested in finding sources!

Hey! This is a great question. Can you specify a particular era you're interested in? (AskHistorians does not allow "anytime in history" questions). From your examples up top, maybe the 20th century?

Thanks!
