I'm outlining a story I want to write using the "letters in bottles thrown into the ocean" device, and I need to know how long my story could end up being, maximum.
My time frame and location will probably change based on the answers here, so I'm willing to be flexible based on that.
I think that is far too random of a question to be answered here. At any point in history, there were manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. The retailer would say "I need 100 bottles of Irish Whisky," and the wholesalers would aggregate those and say, "I need 1000 bottles of Irish Whisky" and so the distillery would put those on a ship. But I'm sure sometimes they would order none, sometimes 10,000, who knows? I'm sure it was a different order every month, coming from a different distillery and traveling on a different ship. Things were much less orderly and organized back then, it was kind of random how things got done. So asking for an average load of liquor on the average ship is an almost impossible question to answer.
