How historically accurate is the classic robin hood hat?

by SubParNoir

What time period is it from? Is it based on a real type of hat? What is the name for this type of hat? Should the top be pointed or rounded?

and any more information or reading that is interesting. Thank you.

Were bycocket hats & cloaks really that popular with hunters during the medieval ages?

The "Robin Hood" hat you're thinking of is a bycocket hat, popular in early 1300s. From the illustrations in the link above it seems the top of the hat could be either pointed or rounded, but the rounded ones are more common.
