On his Naturalization papers he names Winiatyńce ( Vyniatyntsi) , P.O Korolówka as his birthplace. I am assuming P.O is post office but I am not sure. I would like to know some history about this area from 1987- 1927 ( I have seen the Wiki pages of both places, but would like more info. The other thing I was curious about was how he filled out some documents. In one of the later documents from 1940 he fills out the documents for Racial origin as being Ukraine. In an earlier one 1927 his naturalization form he says his Racial origin is Slavonic (sp). He also rights his other language besides English is Polish. He also seemed to consider himself more Ukraine later in life, where in his earlier papers he puts down as Austrian. I know I can also get this answered in r/genealogy, but thought you guys might be able to help with understanding the history side
Your great grand-father was born in Austria, his native place went to Poland in 1919 (after the Polish-Soviet war) and in 1939 it, once again, became a part of the Soviet Ukraine. It's not just him who considered himself 'more Ukraine" later in life but the entire Ukrainian nation, as there was no clear notion of a Ukrainian ethnicity yet at the dawn of the 20th century. Him saying he's Slavic or Slavonic could've been a way of not taking a sides in this muddled debate on whether the Ukrainians are Eastern Poles, or Western Russians, or something completely different (the issue is covered here, with numerous references). But by 1940 a Ukrainian state and language had already become a universally recognized reality so that he could have felt more at ease about employing that notion in documents.
Another way to look at this is by noting the decline of racism in America between 1927 and 1940 together with the notion of a 'slavonic race'.
Edit: As for Vyniatyntsi itself, it is a village with both a catholic and an orthodox church.
