I am looking for fiction or nonfiction about the Elizabethan era of England. Topics and subjects include: Tudor England during Elizabeth's reign, Sir Walter Raleigh, The Roanoke Expeditions, and the Indian tribes that were encountered during the Roanoke expedition.
Hi,
Sorry for the late reply. I'd like to suggest a few things on Roanoke.
Secondary sources (start here):
The Head in Edward Nugent's hand: Roanoke's Forgotten Indians, by Michael Leroy Oberg. This will give you a good accounting of interactions between the English colonists at Roanoke and the Indian peoples inhabiting the region.
For more general overviews of Roanoke see:
Roanoke: The Abandoned Colony, by Karen Ordahl Kupperman
The Roanoke Voyages, 1584-1590: Documents to Illustrate the English Voyages to North America under the Patent Granted to Walter Raleigh in 1584, by David B. Quinn
These will be the major books you'll encounter on most bibliographies.
Primary sources:
Hakluyt, Richard. The Principall Navigations, Voyages, and Discoveries of the English Nation. London: Bishop and Newberie, 1589.
Bry, Theodor de, and Thomas Harriot. [America, part 1, English.] A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia, of the Commodities and of the Nature and Manners of the Naturall Inhabitants. Frankfurt: de Bry, 1590.
Ralph Lane's account of Roanoke...I almost don't even want to suggest this because Lane's account of what went down at the Roanoke expedition under his command is truly a clusterfuck. Lane essentially writes apologia of what he would have done had he the right resources. In other words: "Roanoke didn't suck because of me, it sucked because of you." He is truly the shitty part of the group project that was Lane, Thomas Harriot, and John White.
