The original Constitution of the United States was drafted over a period of time. It's pretty easy to find the September 17th, 1787 version, but can I find any of the earlier drafts to find out who wrote what and when?
The Constitutional Convention kept its proceedings secret, to allow for more candid discussion and to avoid popular uproar, so no previous drafts were published at the time. To find them, you'll want to read the Convention's proceedings. The mainstay for historians is James Madison's Notes on the Debates in the Federal Convention, which he personally kept while a delegate; the Library of Congress has also gathered them together with the official minutes and other delegates' papers.
