Ensign Frank W. O'Flaherty and AAM 1/c Bruno P. Gaido were members of Scouting Squadron Six (VS-6) off the USS Enterprise. Their Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber was hit in one of the fuel tanks during the attack on Akagi and Kaga. They were picked up by the destroyer Makigumo, held and interrogated until executed on 15 June. They were bound with rope and weights, then thrown overboard.
Ensign Wesley Osmus was flying a TBD Devastator with Torpedo Squadron Three (VT-3) off Yorktown when the bombers were attacked as they approached the Japanese carriers. As the last aircraft in the formation, Osmus came under attack first, with the aircraft catching fire. Osmus bailed out. His radioman-gunner, Benjamin R Dodson, Jr., did not make it out. Osmus was picked up by the destroyer Arashi. Like the other two, he was interrogated and thrown overboard.
