When Xenophon passed through Nineveh, he didn't know what the city was and no local knew what it was. Considering the survival of the ethnic Assyrians, how did this happen?

Considering the Assyrians continuously survived till today as a distinct ethnic group and still exist till today in their indigenous homeland, how did this happen? Did the Assyrians really forget of their own kingdom or empire?

Not to discourage further answers but u/Iphikrates addressed the abandoned cities in Xenophon here

Can I piggyback on this question, and ask if anyone knows of a good version of Xenophon for a more casual history enthusiast? I've heard so much of his story, would love to read it, but reading the original seems daunting.
