Hello r/AskHistorians,
I am an American living in the south of the Netherlands. I live <10 min from the German border near Maastricht. The borders around here have changed a lot and belonged to different forces at one time or another throughout history. While biking yesterday, I ran across this:
I thought it might be a musket ball, but read online that if it were, it would likely have a whitish patina from the lead oxide coating. This one appears to be either canister shot or grape shot from a cannon. I’m no weapons expert or historian, so I wanted to ask if anyone here had any knowledge about this sort of thing and how to date them? I’m very interested in the history of this region so learning more about this would really be exciting!
What's the diameter?
