How has the Christian view of "Hell" developed over the times? Is there any basis in the scriptures regarding the current interpretation of Hell as a place of eternal damnation ruled by Satan?

I appreciate any answers, as well as where to read more about this. I've heard that for a lot of current protestant/catholic thoughts about Hell, that there's no basis in the scriptures. I'm not too well-read on this, and I hope someone can enlighten me.
