Documents about the Sykes picot treaty.

by Shunkers

Hey, I don’t know if this is the right place to ask this, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend me academic documents, podcasts, books, etc about the long term effects that the Sykes-Picot treaty had on the Middle East. I am writing an essay about this topic, and have had a hard time finding sources that talk specifically about the effects, and have only had success going in depth about the conflicts themselves.

Hi there,

I recorded two podcast episodes here for the /r/askhistorians podcast:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/5iwgkp/askhistorians_podcast_077_the_end_of_world_war/

Aside from perhaps being of interest in their own right they also include a number of additional sources and references, and I would be happy to point you towards others.

The basic answer is that Sykes-Picot itself had only limited long-term effects because it wasn’t actually implemented. The short term effects of having to effectively un-negotiate it were difficult however.

Happy to take any additional questions you might have if these don’t point you in the right direction.

Hi - we as mods have approved this thread, because while this is a homework question, it is asking for clarification or resources, rather than the answer itself, which is fine according to our rules. This policy is further explained in this Rules Roundtable thread and this META Thread.

As a result, we'd also like to remind potential answerers to follow our rules on homework - please make sure that your answers focus appropriately on clarifications and detailing the resources that OP could be using.

Additionally, while users may be able to help you out with specifics relating to your question, we also have plenty of information on /r/AskHistorians on how to find and understand good sources in general. For instance, please check out our six-part series, "Finding and Understanding Sources", which has a wealth of information that may be useful for finding and understanding information for your essay.
