Soviet Propaganda Ideas for Dissertation

by Rob_WRX

Hello,

I'm thinking about doing my undergraduate dissertation on the topic of Soviet propaganda. Possibly comparing it with more modern Russian means of propaganda. I have only decided on this today so it is in very early stages and I need questions and ideas which I can expand on. Some questions I'd really appreciate any input on: Is this topic relevant and large enough to write 10000 words on and how? What effects do you think propaganda had on the cold war or in general? What are some interesting sub topics and sources I could look into, like different forms of propaganda (such as the state newspaper Pravda) in particular eras? Possible title could be 'From Cominturn to Russia Today: The Evolution of Soviet Propaganda' however this is probably far too wide a subject. what could I specialize in? This is still very early so I'm open to any suggestions and input anyone might have, you'd really be helping me out. Thank you so much for reading!

tl;dr: Need some ideas for my dissertation proposal on Soviet propaganda. What could I look into?

Honestly, you can't really formulate a proper, specific title (or arguement) without looking at the primary sources -- posters, radio broadcasts etc. I am also looking into communist propaganda for my history undergrad, and this is a recurring issue. You can't really decide what you're writing on until you know what's at your disposal. Anyway, if you have any questions etc., or want to discuss this at all, DM me. Best of luck

Hi - we as mods have approved this thread, because while this is a homework question, it is asking for clarification or resources, rather than the answer itself, which is fine according to our rules. This policy is further explained in this Rules Roundtable thread and this META Thread.

As a result, we'd also like to remind potential answerers to follow our rules on homework - please make sure that your answers focus appropriately on clarifications and detailing the resources that OP could be using.

Additionally, while users may be able to help you out with specifics relating to your question, we also have plenty of information on /r/AskHistorians on how to find and understand good sources in general. For instance, please check out our six-part series, "Finding and Understanding Sources", which has a wealth of information that may be useful for finding and understanding information for your essay.

Having just finished my history dissertation. Don't do it unless you either link it to a country with a language you speak or you speak Russian. Dozens of people on my course had their ideas shut down because of that.

Your work needs to be super heaving focused on that primary stuff

Yeah unfortunately. I had the same problem. However linking things to say Britain makes it feasible. So for example British reactions to Napoleon. It'll allow you to focus on something like Napoleon but use British sources that are much easier to use :)
