Help researching the IRA

by nmcj1996

My granny recently died, and sorting through her things we came across a photograph of her father who was in apparently in the 3rd Tipperary Brigade. This is a rather famous photo (link at bottom) as well as a rather famous brigade, being responsible for the Soloheadbeg ambush. However, I've been unable to find any reproduction of this photo with a key as to its members. Nor is his name mentioned in any accounts of the ambush (although we don't know exactly when he joined). We've also looked at the 1922 Irish Army census, and can't find a match for his name and town. Can anyone point us in the right direction of how to find either records of who was in the 3rd Tipperary Brigade or who was in this photo? Thanks for the help!!

Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!

You could try this site from Óglaigh na hÉireann the Irish Bureau of Military History 1913 - 1922. The year 1913 was the foundation of the Irish Volunteers which later morphed into the IRA. The website covers the Irish War of Independence which ended with the Treaty in Dec 1921 and the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922.
