What do you do for a job? What kind of area do you live in (urban, suburban, rural) What do you think the job market is like for young history majors today?
I start college this fall, and I never really considered majoring in history until recently, so I don't know much about careers, any info would help. My current plans are to study Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering. I would like to focus on WWI/WWII and basically American and European history from 1800's to now. I also study German and French so that would obviously be helpful for a career in history.
I've been working toward my Masters for history and the job market is very complex. I recently interned for a Historical Start-up that focuses on giving proper burial rights to soldiers who died without them, and it was one of the best experiences in my life. I could go on and on about all of the job opportunities you have once you get your degree, but I'll keep it short. In summary being a historian opens doors for almost any historical job you can think of. However, many jobs require extra degrees or other requirements. For example I wanted to work for the US Forest Service as a resident Historian in one of their parks, but just having a history degree didn't open that door. I was also required to have an archeology degree as well. So I guess I can't answer your question fully. All I'm saying is to research your job before you start school so you make sure you hit all the requirements.
