Did they keep moving until they found good pasture? Did they send scouts or explorers to find land and report back?
When they did set out, was it all at once or did they go in smaller groups?

Nomadic people still exist in various places - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomadic_pastoralism#Nomadic_pastoralism_around_the_world -, so you might try just asking them directly in /r/Mongolia or /r/Finland etc. If you're looking for general info, x-posting to /r/AskAnthropology could be worthwhile.
