What improvisations did the Wehrmacht make to adapt to the Russian climate?

by UnderwhelmedSprigget

Can anyone point me in the direction of some material on the effects of summer, spring and autumn on the Wehrmacht during their time in Russia?

I've looked at the US Army Historical Division report, 'Effects of climate on combat in European Russia', but I cant find any other works that go into much detail on the effects of the spring & autumn rains/mud, or the effects summer had on men, equipment and machines.

Well, there was the "Ostkette" and the "Winterkette", "Tracks for the Eastern Front", "Tracks for Winter".

Winterketten basically were normal Tank tracks, but with extensions that potruted at the end: https://www.worldwarphotos.info/wp-content/gallery/germany/tanks/stug-40/StuG_40_with_Winterketten.jpg

Ostketten were just wider tracks, for use during the Mud season.

Both were, iirc mostly used on Panzer III, and Variants, and the Panzer IV... and variants.

Unfortunatly, i currently can not provide sources. But you might find something here http://forum.panzer-archiv.de/viewtopic.php?t=5825
