Books on Mengistu and the Red Terror/Ethiopian Civil War

by GdanskBoy

I have always been fascinated by Mengistu and the Ethiopian Civil War and Famine that took place after. I read about it in Martin Meredith's: Fate of Africa. Since then, I have found 2 books that seem to comprehensively cover the subject: Africa Watch's Evil Days. and The Ethiopian revolution 1974-1987 by Andargachew Tiruneh. These books are very interesting to me, but they are a bit dry and academic. Nothing wrong with that, but I am not an expert on Ethiopia or an Amharic speaker, so I am looking for something geared more towards the layman. A firsthand account would be awesome! I saw that the theme on this subreddit was Coups, so I figured this might be the time to ask this question. Here are some links to those who are not familiar with this period of time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mengistu_Haile_Mariam

As an aside, is it true that Haile Selassie was buried under an outhouse? That is a grim fate for a man who held such a high place in African affairs!

Some parts are dense, but Don Donham's Marxist Modern is great.
