Primary Research Paper on Dust Bowl

by stickynote14

Hello fellow historians,

I am a history grad student and I need help on deciding a topic for a primary source research paper (4 pages) on the Dust Bowl. I have found plenty of pictures and letters from people during that time, but I need a focused topic on the Dust Bowl. I would like to focus on the devastation of crops and farmland, but I'm open to anything really. Anyone here have any ideas?

One way to go about studying it would be the idea of perceptions. How did people perceive it? You could consider those who lived it or even those who didn't. How did newsreels portray it (did they)? What about articles? What/who was portrayed as responsible?

At only 4 pages, you should focus on something quite specific. Perhaps the role prairie grasses performed in preserving the topsoil, or the lack of awareness of long-cycle weather patterns, or the slow uptake of sustainable farming techniques.
