B-27s

Is there a way I can find out what plane my uncle was a tail gunner on during WW2? I know he saw action an had a scar across his forehead that he said was from shrapnel. I would love to know the name of the plane so I can learn more about what he did during the war.

No aircraft in the US air force has ever had the designation B-27. There was an experimental design intended to fill the role of medium bomber along side aircraft like the B-26 Marauder, but the XB-27 never left paper. Unfortunately, the role of 'tail gunner' is shared across many platforms as well so that doesn't tell us much. Virtually every multi-engine aircraft had a tail-mounted gunner.

Do you know what unit he served in? Which theater? If he earned a purple heart- or any award for his service- his name should be recorded somewhere. It's hit or miss but the US national archives are partially available online.
