Was the Metaxas dictatorship in Greece fascist?

by endgame00

I’ve heard a lot of conflicting accounts on the Greek regime during and after WW2; could they accurately be described as fascist and did Metaxas ever consider aligning with the Axis powers?

Metaxas' dictatorship was modeled after fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, but it wasn't quite fascist; It lacked imperialism and it wasn't anti-semetic. Metaxas didn't kill his political opponents (unlike Hitler), instead, he imprisoned and/or tortured them. Metaxas' dicattorship was focused on building a "3rd Hellenic Civilization", which to him meant turning Greeks (particularly the youth) into patriots and strengthening Greece, in every possible area. Metaxas' dictatorship did succeed in some ways, at least in improving its very, very poor financial situation and preparing the army for the 2nd Great War.

Did Metaxas ever consider joining the Axis? No. He stated multiple times (both publicly and in his private diary) that the war was over when the UK joined. Also, Greece's economy was largely based on exporting through the medittarenean- Metaxas did not want to mess with the British navy.
