What role did the Romans play in the origins of Christianity?

Did the Romans create Christianity and/or play any major role in the creation of the religious texts of the new testament? This is not a question concerning the Council of Nicaea and the "cannonizing" of the text, but well before then, what role, if any, did the Roman political elite have in the origins of the new testament?

Christianity and Rabbinical Judaism began at the same time, in AD70 when the Romans destroyed the Jewish Temple. Jesus came theologically at that time to replace the yearly Jewish Atonement sacrifice. Belief in Jesus could not have preceded this event because there was no reason theologically for a replacement sacrifice before this time. So the Romans did play a role in the invention of Christianity. However there is no evidence that they had any role in the formation of the texts. Matthew according to the fathers was the first gospel written and originally written in Hebrew, for Jewish Christians. It was afterwards translated into Greek and edited for use in Gentile Christian churches.
