What did ancient Mediterranean civilizations like the Greeks or Romans actually think laid west beyond the Atlantic Ocean?

by MistrSwisher

Sorry if this has been asked somewhere. I found several threads inquiring as to why they never attempted to sail across the Atlantic, but I couldn't find any on what they would have expected to find if they did. How accurate were their estimations of the size of the earth and the distance to far eastern lands such as India and China? If they had combined their knowledge of trade routes to the east with measures of the circumference of the earth, wouldn't someone have realized how much empty space was unexplored on the planet? Or were their estimates extremely inaccurate? Did they believe there was nothing but ocean between Western Europe and Eastern Asia?

They were just talking about it in another thread. u/taciteanus talks about that subject shortly. Lets see if this link works : https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/8gxmk7/comment/dyg8yyt?st=JGSJZ0JI&sh=a0334ca1
