What laws were used to judge the Nazis during the Nuremberg Trials?

by Jarl_Swagruuf

International laws outlawing genocide and racial crimes were written by the newly formed UN after WWII precisely in order to prevent another Holcaust, right? Then under what charges were Nazi leaders sentences for their crimes during the war? Had the League of Nations passed similar laws before 1939?

These previous replies may be of interest. In "Did the Nazis expect something like the Nuremberg trials?" , /u/kieslowskifan addressed years before the trials. In "Was the Nuremburg trials a kangaroo court?" , kieslowskifan talked more about the charges and the trials themselves (in that top-level reply, and down further ).
