Did people in the past worry about bodybuilding like people do today? Or were they just naturally healthy?

I know I've seen statues of Ancient Greeks and they're super buff so they must have done a lot of work to get into that form. But say the normal soldier would he do loads of pushups to get ripped or just practice stuff that makes him a good soldier? Basically, when did bodybuilding become a thing?

Hi there -- here are a couple of older posts that touch on this, from u/iphikrates. (Spoiler alert: there really isn't such a thing as a "soldier" in the ancient world, and they weren't bodybuilding.)
