How were the peoples of the different pre-unification states viewed by the rest of Europe?

I don't know if this is the right place to post this. I am interested in the pre-unification states, and was wondering if any of you know how the peoples of these states where viewed by the Europe. I don't mean how the Italians as a whole where viewed but how people viewed the people of Piedmont for example.

Unification of what? You mentioned Piedmont; are you referring to Italy, or the overall emergence and consolidation of nation-states in the whole of Europe? Or are you instead referring the views of central and northern Europeans towards pre-unitary states all over the world, as embodied by artistic movements like exoticism, and looking further, orientalism. And what sense would "viewed" take? Who would be doing the "viewing" and why?

Sorry for all these clarifiers, but the question really could have a multitude of answers.
