Today, the gold standard is generally criticized as inappropriate for modern economies. Is there any evidence that it was perceived as such by anyone in Ancient Rome? What about in other periods?

The Ancient Romans? Did the Romans opperate under a "gold standard"? My understanding is that the gold standard was an invention of the 19th century, in response to large gold finds in California, South Africa, etc. And that before the 19th century currencies used many standards, especially silver and others. Is that wrong?
