What are some good detailed books or documentaries pertaining to the Hundred Years War?

by I_just_had_to_post

I'm looking to understand clearly how it came about, get a clear grasp of how the territory ownership evolved during the three major phases of the war, and the fallout of the war (War of the Roses, etc). I find plenty of informations about Crecy, Agincourt, and how warfare changed during the war but I'd like to learn more about the entire chronology and politics of the time.

  • Christopher Allmand, The Hundred Years War: England and France at War (1988) is the Cambridge Medieval Textbooks entry on the subject. This means it is super-dense but also straightforward. It's a really good one-volume introduction to a holistic view of the time

  • David Green, The Hundred Years' War: A People's History - not actually a Marxist take, but rather looking at the 100YW through the experiences of different groups of people: knights and nobles, peasants, Church officials, soldiers, prisoners of war, women, people who tried to broker peace, kings, patriots. The most readable entry on this list by far, but that's partially because it doesn't grapple as much with the geopolitics and the messy history behind the 100YW

  • Jonathan Sumption, The Hundred Years War (4 volumes: Trial by Battle, Trial by Fire, Divided Houses, Cursed Kings) - It is what it is: four enormous volumes that provide an amazing and thorough overview of the whole thing...but, in 3000+ pages (hence me listing Allmand first, lol)

  • Andrew Villalon and Donald Kagey (eds.), The Hundred Years War (3 volumes: A Wider Focus, Different Vistas, Further Considerations) - the most academic of the 3 and cost-prohibitive unless you have access to a uni library. Essays from top scholars that place the conflict in a larger European context, which can mean different countries or "home front" takes in London, and so forth

In conclusion, if you aspire to write a book on the Hundred Years War, please call it something besides "The Hundred Years War." Thank you!
