The early Imperial legion had ten cohorts with the first being double sized. Was each century in the first cohort double sized or did they have an extra six centuries?
The first century of a legion under the principate consisted of 800 men (not quite double), broken up into five centuries of 160 men each. So actually it had one less century than a regular cohort, but each of these was double the size.
