Where can I search the origin of my surnames?

by permalac

Recently in my region, the idea that depending on what surname do you have you are a supremacist is spreading, and since my family has been around here (80 km radius) for as long as 500 years that makes me a 'the facto supremacist'. (this idea comes from several political parties and has no real meaning but is kinda hateful. )

So, I realised that I have no idea what my surnames and my family surnames come from and if they mean something. And I started little research.

My initial research shows a lot of Jewish conversion to Catholicism to escape death, and one of my surnames does not appear anywhere like it is only my family or something alike. I do not know anyone else with it, but I do not know much people by the surname if you know what I mean.

  • So, is there any European database to check for surnames?

If it is of any help what I have found so far my surnames are in Northen Spain, the region that the Franc gave to certain Counts to create the later known as Marche d'Espagne, south of France, north of Italy and Switzerland.

Members of my family have already done very extensive research over the years and I can get my hands on some books which trace back our family house up to the year 900, where the house was given as dowry to one daughter of Roger I of Carcassonne, so that is going to give me a lot of surnames to look for.

  • Also, is there any easy to use, and free to use app that can help me out aggregate all the information I could find?

Any advice on this crusade will be very appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Genealogy research is a popular hobby, so there are many options for software. The gang over in /r/genealogy can give you advice on that; they can also give you examples of sites that purport to give histories of surnames. On the former, I'd personally advise against recording your family history on a website (as opposed to locally) for privacy reasons. On the latter, don't take those sites too seriously.
