Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was also a proponent of women's rights and family issues. She took an aggressive stand against polygamy, arguing that the practice was an affront to women's rights and amounted to the enslavement of women. This may seem a non-issue from a modern point of view, but at the time Mormonism and others still reverberated with a call for polygamy as a practice ordained in the Old Testament.

Stowe's Maine house has been listed as a National Historic Landmark because of her authorship of Uncle Tom's Cabin. In 2013 her home in Hartford, Connecticut was listed as a National Historic Landmark because this was her home when she took on women's and family issues. The house is next door to the famed Mark Twain house.
