The possibility of finding Cleopatra's tomb makes me giddy, but as someone who majored in anthropology/archaeology, I know to take it with a certain degree of skepticism.
I think Kathleen Martinez is an amazing and inspiring personality, as I read about her. But I'm worried that she is getting our hopes up too much. I'm excited about what she and the team have found, because honestly, even if they don't find the tomb, they've found a wealth of information.
My question is how historians and archaeologists are following this? And what they think of it?
I know that Mary Beard has her doubts about the site, but Egyptologist John Baines has expressed some willingness to believe Martinez and Hawass' assertions that this is most likely where she was ultimately buried. Personally I think it's a bit too far from where the palace would have been in the old city of Alexandria. The way ancient historians write about her death, they make it seem as though her tomb was relatively nearby where Octavian was quartering and residing.
