Was what happened to the early settlement of Roanoke ever found out or even came close to being found out?

I already posted this but I accidentally typed it wrong and I also posted it at a bad time. This has always fascinated me so if I can get a good answer that would be great

No, and it might never be known for certain The fact that the ones that might truly know would be the local natives, and they had varying stories. They didn't have a written language, so they didn't write their own accounts. So anything we come up with is speculation and hearsay

When Governor White left the colony in 1589 they were there when he returned in 1590 they were completely gone. Did they move the village? Did they all die? Did they die at the hands of the natives? Were some or all taken prisoners by a local tribe?

The big question to even a clue as to what happened is the "Dare Stones". The first Stone discovered in 1937 might be authentic. After this stone was found, several others were found and they might not be authentic. Which casts a doubt over it all, even the first one found.

So I think the only answer to the only possible clue, is what do you ultimately think of the Dare Stones, especially the first one.

This sub hates using wiki as a source, but I think it has a very good run down over-view of the Dare Stones. Link: https://www.brenau.edu/darestones/
