Why aren't cigars cigar-shaped?

Cigars can have pointed, rounded or flat ends based on how they were rolled. Part of the reason modern cigars are so uniform in their shape is because most examples one sees are by professional manufactures, either using machines or hand rolling them but always with an emphasis on making a consistent product. But if a layman was to roll their own cigars as many did in the past it would probably taper as the cigar shape you described. Additionally remember that when cigars are smoked the end is cut off leading to a strait end point.
