"MAKE SOME NOIIISSEE!" What's the history of working the crowd in popular music?

by tiredstars

I've been listening to some live sets from BBC Music's Big Weekend this afternoon. Hearing bands (and people introducing them) exhort the audience to "put your hands up!" or "make some noise!" is so familiar as to make it seem like it's always been done.

(Incidentally, I'm not quite sure what to call this specific kind of shout-out. Does it have a specific name?)

As we know, everything starts somewhere. So what is the history here? When do the call-outs we're familiar with in popular music today start, and where do they come from? What did Elvis shout to audiences (other than "thnkyouvrymch") to get them excited, or Little Richard, or the Beatles?

More broadly, what is the history of interaction with the audience?

(I've limited this to popular music, but only to focus the question - I am interested in other genres and older styles too.)
