I found a stash of odd photos from 1916 and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the content

by ThatTallAwkwardGuy

The uniforms in the pictures aren't very familiar to me and was just wondering if someone smarter than me could give a little background. Any info would be appreciated.

The photos in question: https://imgur.com/a/OwlQ09I?

Semi better scans: https://imgur.com/a/ASMcIQi

I was torn between posting here or /r/WhatIsThisThing but decided here was more appropriate as the subject in question is the content of the photographs, although I may have misjudged so feel free to point me to an appropriate subreddit

They look like Italian officiers of WWI (can you provide some scans instead of photos? The emblems on their berets would help a lot but quality is not good enough to distinguish them), moreover "Gennaio 1916" is January 1916 in Italian. Where did you find them?

I managed to decipher the location, it is Hum (Colmo), a small fraction of Brda (Collio Sloveno), conquered by the Italian Army after the fourt battle of Isonzo. You can see this map from the Italian Army historical website. Hum/Colmo is just a few km north-east of Oslavia, where the frontline curves.

Now for the uniforms, the man on the left of the first picture, the emblem on his hat looks like the Artillery one (flaming bomb over two crossed cannons). They are probably Officiers and/or NCOs. I can't distinguish the ranks but i found other pictures of officiers with that kind of coats (with fur). If you can upload scans with a better resolution it will be easier to help you :)

I would post this in r/history where people are more free to speculate. There is a high threshold to comment in this sub.
