Water in deserts and dry climates sometimes has a high alkaline content. Was alkaline poisoning a known problem for thirsty pioneers and explorers of the American West during the 19th century? What symptoms and long-term effects did it have?

I have heard from modern hikers that alkaline water in the desert should be avoided, but I’ve been unable to find anything about American pioneers drinking alkaline water. Thanks!

To my knowledge, alkaline water won't cause any negative health effects...
