What did Julius Caesar do to be considered a tyrant?

by Tazario123

I’m reading Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar”, and Brutus and his fellow conspirators keep mentioning how Caesar has become a tyrant, and for that reason he must be killed. I was wondering what his specific actions were that led to him becoming a tyrant.

/u/xenophontheathenian and I tackled this a couple years ago.

But of course with all questions involving Caesar, there's room for more discussion.

Oh, I made a mistake in that old answer. I misquoted Meier at the end: the notion that the way to save the Republic was to let Caesar do his thing and retire is the position Meier rejects. He just phrased it far more memorably than his own position - the political system was doomed and if Caesar didn't kill it someone else would. I'll go add an edit.
