The events at the start of Hitchhiker's Guide are probably a bit exaggerated. So what would the process have been when your house was in the way of a new road at that time in the UK?

Just as an FYI 'Eminent Domain' is the US term. The UK (and I believe other commonwealth countries) call it 'Compulsory Purchase'
