Why is sexually explicit imagery such a common motif in the pottery of the Moche culture of pre-Incan Peru?

The Moche Culture of Peru is perhaps best-known for their remarkable and iconic pottery, which often takes sexually explicit forms. Why were sexual motifs common in Moche pottery; did the design of these objects and vessels hold symbolic or ritualistic meaning in Moche Culture? Or were stylized sexual images simply a commonly utilized design element amongst ancient Moche potters?
