CHARLIE and DOG GREEN Sectors, on the far right (west) of OMAHA beach, attacked by A Company, 116th Regiment, 29th Division and C Co, 2nd Ranger Bn. This was the worst sector, and about 2/3rds of A Company were killed or wounded. B Company, which landed after A in the same sector, also sustained heavy casualties.
There were a number of reasons for this. This part of the coastline was dominated by high cliffs, making the attack much harder. The air bombardment by heavy bombers fell inland of the cliffs. The attack was also unsupported by units to the left and right. Just west of CHARLIE sector the cliffs drop straight into the water, offering no place to land, other than the Rangers scaling the cliff at Pointe du Hoc. The unit that was supposed to land to left of DOG GREEN, G Co, 116th Regiment, in DOG WHITE sector, was blown east by the wind, opening up a 1,000 yard gap between the two companies. This allowed the Germans to concentrate more fire on the isolated companies.
G Company and F Company became intermixed on DOG RED and EASY GREEN, with G Co actually landing east of F Co. Parts of G Co. came ashore where grass fires obscured the beach, and had a relatively easy time coming ashore. F Co. took about 50% casualties, however. E Company, which was to be to F's left, was blown clear over into 16th Regiment's sector.
