How did Herod the Great expand his kingdom to the point of it being divided into the Tetrarchy at his death?

Strange question maybe, but i can't find info on any wars he fought to expand the kingdom. The only map i found of Judea at the time of his conquest shows that the Hasmoneans had lost a good deal of land before he took the crown.

If that map is correct, the Hasmoneans lost alot of territory to Roman Syria, so how was Herod able to regain it and expand his land once he took the throne?
