Soemu Toyoda was the only member of the Japanese armed forces to be acquitted after being charged with war crimes. What about his case was different from the rest?

Admiral Toyoda was charged with very much the same crimes that General Yamashita was charged with: essentially, he was charged with dereliction of duty in that he did not control his troops or stop them from committing atrocities, most notably activities by IJN personnel that led to what was referred to as a "Rape of Manila." However, Toyoda was more of a military planner and did not actually have purview over the troops in question: that responsibility fell to General Yamashita, which the court had ruled also likely knew about the incident but did nothing to stop it. As a result, Admiral Toyoda was acquitted as control of the troops was not his responsibility: therefore he had no command responsibility to stop it whether or not he knew of the atrocities.
