It's a striking coincidence that these mysterious steppe people appear to have both invaded Southern lands from the North Eurasian steppes at exactly the same time in history, down to the same decade, AND have had a cognate name ascribed to them by independent scholarly sources in Europe, Persia and India, HUN/HUNNU/HUNA. And I have read previously that there has been debate over whether these people are connected to the Xiongnu (very similar sounding name) steppe clan confederation in what is now Mongolia and parts of Eastern Russia today by ancient Chinese scholars some 300 years prior to the invasions.
Is there any evidence that Attila's Huns and the "Alchon hunas" and "White Hunas " etc. of Central Asia, Persia and India are the same people, from the same confederation, spoke the same indigenous language, etc? And is there evidence of their being an offshoot of the Xiongnu confederacy of Northeast Asia? Have genetic studies been done on bodies believed to be Huns or Hunas from this time, linguistic evidence in some words, cultural similarities, etc. ? If these people are not the same, why are their names so similar? And if they are the same, what caused them to migrate south from the Steppes into Europe and Central Asia? Was there a climate phenomenon, or where they attacked by other steppe clans?
A few days later, someone asked, "How widely accepted is the Xiongnu - Hun connection?" . That bears on at least the Xiongnu part of the question.
