In terms of rigurosity, exhaustivity, and literary quality. I would prefer it to be an essay or a non-fiction book of course. I don't have any kind of problem with big length.

This is the one that most recommend today as being the best. Personally I found it very interesting, especially how revealing it is about the ferociousness of his Indian campaign.
