Hey folks,
I am Daniel and I run the YouTube Channel Three Arrows where I publish videos debunking bad history with a focus on debunking common myths about Nazi Germany and Holocaust Denial. I will be here answering your questions today from 19h CET to 21h CET.
Ask away!
EDIT: Thank you for your fantastic questions everyone. I had alot of fun doing this. If I didnt get around to answering your question this time, you can just send it to me on my CuriousCat page (https://curiouscat.me/ThreeArrows) and I'll do my best to get back to you.
Also thank you to the lovely moderators for inviting me and moderating the AMA.
I hope you guys have a great weekend. Auf Wiedersehen!
Hi Daniel,
thank you for doing this.
Youtube is generally regarded as an environment even more toxic than other venues on the internet. Seeing as you work on debunking bad history about Nazi Germany, is there a considerable backlash?
What would you say are the challenges and specifics of doing history in youtube video format?
One of your videos concerns the bombing of Dresden, which had been a hot button issue in German commemoration of the Third Reich for some time. Would you say that there has been a "warming up" of older German Neo-Nazi myths currently?
Why do you think the holocaust is denied in the first place? Is it for political gain? Publicity? A genuine belief in Nazi ideals?
Hi Daniel -- thank you so much for your work countering bad history in a venue where that's seriously important. (Not that it's ever not important to counter Holocaust denial, but the structure of Youtube channels seem especially vulnerable to the propagation of some lousy stuff.) I find a lot of the people I know who are most curious and avid about consuming history media in video format are young people in their teens or early 20s -- how can public historians gear their work toward young audiences to combat bad history?
Hey Daniel, as University students how do you think we can help stop the spread of baseless historical revisionism driven by a political agenda?
There are extreme cases when I have to argue with people who think Ottomans won Gallipolli because mystical Islamic flying green things aided them. The person said this because this was the way it was taught to them before University.
Love your content!
Who are your biggest YouTube inspirations that led you to making these videos? Also, would you consider having a chat with destiny, talking about the alt right and the "sceptics™" on YouTube?
Greetings from Sweden and best wishes👋
What would be your favourite period (other than 20th century Germany) to discuss or study?
What got you want to go out of your way debunking misconceptions about nazi germany?
Do you think that the prevalence of denialism has any relationship to the way history is taught? If so, do you see any ways that teaching of subjects like the Holocaust could be updated/improved?
Hi, discovered your stuff recently, great content, thanks for your efforts!
Other than Nazi Germany/Holocaust, are there other common areas of bad history you've come across that the far right tend to engage in?
What direction can we expect your channel to be going in in the near future?
Fact checking websites like Snopes exist, yet right wing extremists seem to just laugh them off or create conspiracies about them to "discredit" them as propaganda within their circles.
Even if you show them facts, they simply assert that your facts are wrong. Considering that, how do you think it's possible to ever reach these people? Or do you think they're just doomed to create and believe whatever bogus conspiracies they need to prop up their hateful worldview?
PS: Angebot für Bier steht immernoch aufm Tisch 👌
Thanks for doing this ama. Glad to see your page blow up so quickly. Some of these questions might be outside the realm of what you want to discuss today. Feel free to ignore. =)
How do you feel about radical groups (primarily anarchists in the us, but also communists) appropriating the three arrows given their early history?
How can modern anti-fascists better use historical narratives to a)learn from the mistakes of their predecessors and b)promote a more inclusive and vibrant movement?
What are some false narratives you see anti-fascists promoting?
Hello Daniel, why do Holocaust deniers always bring up the Red Cross reports on the camps?
Hi Daniel,
I just watched some of your videos. You do good work!
Do you see *new* errors and myths around Nazi Germany being created, or is it mostly the same old ones that are getting thrown around at ever higher velocities by new technology? In the case of Dresden it's amazing how it seems to mostly be the same old stuff straight from Goebbels that seems to always come back.
Has Germany's official emphasis on recognizing and learning about this history helped at all, compared to other countries? At least in the US case, it seems like the big danger is the great chunk of the population that *kind of* knows about World War II and the Holocaust, but knows just enough to make the myths seem plausible.
Hi Daniel,
I've been watching your videos ever since someone linked your Dunkirk video on some subreddit here. Thank you for being awesome.
1.) Do you think that with oversimplification of some things in history, that there contributes to a large part of more naive people falling into the traps of Holocaust deniers or bad interpretations of Nazi Germany?
2.) Do you think that deflection by many Holocaust deniers as a tactic to get people to rethink what they know about history is a topic you will one day take on? Such as "history was written by the victors", Japanese internment camps, the bombing of Dresden and the atomic bombs, and some of the atrocities the Soviet Union had done being used to deflect the atrocities Nazi Germany commited?
3.) What do you think is the right thing to do moving forward in terms of remembering the Holocaust? Do you think there is a right way in handling such a dark and depressing topic?
4.) Do you think that content creators are responsible for educating people about history when we include it in our work? I ask this because with the rise of movies about WW2, and of course YouTubers who discuss it on their podcasts there seems to be an uprising of people who get their information from them.
stealth edit:
5.) Will you ever make a video on the period directly after WW2? I know it may be hard to relate it back to what your channel mostly deals with, but as someone who loves studying West Germany, I'd be eternally grateful. :D
6.) Do you think you’ll ever do a video focused on Nazi propaganda from the 1930s to the neo-Nazi propaganda we see today?
Hi Daniel! Love all your videos, and I love history, so I really appreciate the time you put into such important subjects.
Perhaps this is a bit beyond history, but a lot of the people you make videos in response to seem to blatantly miss simple truths that could be illuminated with actually doing some research. I know you've made videos about Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, responded to Aydin Paladin, etc. Would you say that the subjects of your response videos are simply uneducated on the history, or do you think they're deliberately trying to paint a more sympathetic picture of authoritarianism?
It's probably different for each person, but I struggle at times on whether to extend any of them the benefit of doubt. Some of them (Enoch, Paladin) it seems plainly obvious that they have authoritarian or fascistic tendencies and want to try and rid any related movement of sins, but I wonder if some of them are just misinformed (perhaps deliberately).
It's pretty clear that this kind of propaganda is usually done by the far-right, but what kinds of 'bad history' from the far-left are most common?
Hi Daniel, I'm an off and on watcher of your content, but I've loved your videos! I really appreciate your work especially as an ethnic minority.
My question for you today concerns a friend of mine who, while he doesn't deny the holocaust, adamantly believes that the numbers of the event were conflated by a "Jewish conspiracy" and that killing nearly 8 million people systematically isn't"realistically possible" because of how large a task it is. He also views it is a skewed history from the Israeli government and Jewish people in an attempt to garner international sympathy. It's been difficult for me to learn that a close friend of mine of 7+ years has held such anti-semetic beliefs. Isn't there an insurmountable amount of proof in historical documentation that proves the number of deaths in the holocaust? But more importantly how do we cope with the fact that people who are close to us (friends or family) strongly defend "bad history" beliefs?
Hi Daniel,
Big fan of your videos, you recently changed my entire outlook on a lot of topics I held dearly regarding the political landscape of Europe and in general the current situation we are in.
Do you think Holocaust Denial should be banned / punished on a legal level and if yes, do you think it conflicts with the epistemologic methods laid out by Karl Popper in the form of falsificationism in his book Logik und Forschung.
Hi Daniel, big fan of your work ^^
What do you think of the theory of people having certain "gateways" into neonazi viewpoints? For example, if a person watches someone like H3H3 who himself isn't a nazi but obviously engages in sympathetic behaviors, they'll be warmed up to the ideas and eventually might be led even further down the dark rabbit hole of holocaust denialism.
In addition, what can we do to stop this from happening? Your videos are obviously very helpful and I've actually shown them to some of my friends who I know are into the "skeptic" side of things to try to broaden their viewpoints, but that tactic only works with people who are open minded.
sorry if my questions are all over the place, but again you're doing good work and I really appreciate your videos :D
I think I asked your curious cat this question but I forget if you addressed it yet.
Your video on the Dresden bombing was an eye opener for me. I was unaware that history had been manipulated in such a way. Do you plan on addressing any similar myths like how the USSR only beat Germany by sheer numbers, or the myth of Rommel, or the clean wehrmacht?
Bonus question: what’s your take on JBP’s claim that the Nazis were an atheist movement? There was a post here a while ago debunking that but I was wondering if you had anything to add.
How much do you think most people are learned about the very Early War period, things like the "Phony War", the MR Pact, invasion of Poland by Germany/USSR and the sort? If it's fairly little do you think this could lead to some presumptions about how the war was carried out and the nature of the Nazi's themselves from the get go?
Hi, I've started a channel similar to yours, launching my first vid today. What kind of advice can you give with regards to promoting a channel dealing with 1920s to 30s Germany?
Hey Three Arrows, Why have you picked Nazi Germany as the main focus of your channel, instead of say, branching out and incorporating Mussolini, Franco, or other totalitarians from other ideologies? Would you ever consider doing a video debunking fascist propaganda that isn’t necessarily German National Socialism, for example, Mussolini?
Hi, Daniel
I love your content and as someone who was never as versed in history outside of America, I always learn many new things from them. Have you always been this well-versed in the history of the Holocaust? What drove your interest into debunking Nazi propaganda and making informative videos on it? Finally, what advice would you give to someone who also wants to try their hand at the political commentary game?
Hi Daniel, casual fan here. I was wondering what your path to your current channel was? What did you study, and what inspired you to start making your videos?
Are you familiar with the Identitaire Bewegung? Are they just more polished neo-nazis? And have you ever cosidered doing a video about the periods directly before and after Hitler(you hinted at it in the Gun Rights video, but I was curious if you would engage with the treaty of Versailles, etc)
Hey Daniel, love your videos. Do you think anything would have changed if the NSDAP actually commited to their supposed early anti-capitalist ideological promises?
Where did the myth that the German army lost the war because of Italian incompetence in Greece caused Germany to delay Barbarossa and therefore lose the war? And did Hitler really delay Barbarossa because of the Balkan campaign?
In many countries such as Germany and Canada, Holocaust denier is outlawed. What is your stance on laws regarding Holocaust denial?
Also, I’m a big fan of your channel and I was very excited to see you do this. Great work!
Hi, I'm a fan of your channel even though I only discovered your content a few weeks ago.
What got you into history in the first place? Was it a relative or a good history teacher/book?
Assuming the 20 year rule is being relaxed for the AMA, what is your opinion on the resurgence of the far right and even NeoNaziism in Germany with regards to laws banning Holocaust denial & certain displays of Nazi symbols? Do you think those laws have actually emboldened denialists & NeoNazis by allowing them to play the victim?
Three arrows! Glad to see u here, love your channel. Do you think that a countercoup in Germany could’ve happened with the Monarchists and Republicans against the Nazis if the night of long knives failed? And if so, what would be the outcome?
Hi folks,
If you're a regular reader of AskHistorians, you know our rules. If you're coming here from somewhere else, please be advised that we will ban users for engaging in Holocaust denialism, and have already done so to one user in this thread.
Also, please remember that our AMA rules only allow answers from the guest.
Thanks and be excellent to one another!
Weird. I signed up for Curious Cat just because of your vids and go to try to find you...and your profile is no longer active. What happened?
We've been bitching about this on the neoliberal subreddit.
Would it be accurate to characterize the national roots of Germany- so we're talking about Post-Napoleon 19th century Early Germany here- as inherently bigoted? I'm having a hard time looking at their reaction to international organizations- the Catholic Church- and what Germany saw as 'international' people- Jews and Roma- and seeing them as a threat to the sovereignty of the German State and not drawing a direct parallel to Adolf Hitler being convinced beyond all doubt that there was a cabal of Jewish communists in the Soviet Union- the same one which would engage in mass-genocide of the Jews citing 'Zionism', oops- who sought to destroy Germany.
Do you think the antisemitism and general bigotry- Nazis were not thrilled about the Catholics, and the Nazi party found the least political support in regions Catholics dominated in Germany- in Germany was something baked into the Germanic region, or something that was baked into the nationalistic fervor that swept the region? Maybe a bit of both?
How does Rammstein, the band of former communist East Germany, support the left?
Hi Daniel,
Do you feel historical studies have a left-wing bias? Do you find yourself guilty of looking at history with a political bias sometimes?
