The Red Army (and Polish forces) had already encircled Berlin, and were about 500m from Hitler's bunker at the time of his death. In fact, the Soviets started artillery bombardments about 10 days before his death, and reached the outskirts of the city 9 days before.
The western allies had reached the Elbe, which was about 80km to the west of Berlin.
