Where in France is the Jaffe Defense Area and the Roube Defense Area during World War II?

by B26Marauder

My grandfather’s flight missions state that he flew B-26 bomber over those two Defense Areas in France. We are trying to locate where in France that might be. B-26 Marauder

The Jaffe Defense Area was near the city of Royan on the west coast of France. A number of ports were heavily fortified by the Germans as Festung (fortresses); rather than suffer heavy casualties trying to capture them, many including Royan were isolated and surrounded by Allied forces following the invasion of Europe.

De Gaulle planned to liberate the French ports in late 1944, but the German counter-attack in the Ardennes delayed plans until April 1945 when Operation Vénérable was launched, Free French ground units being supported by heavy Allied bombing raids from both medium and heavy bombers including the 17th Bombardment Group.

Another B-26 bomb group, the 320th, have a very comprehensive [website] (http://320thbg.org/index.html) including [unit diaries] (http://320thbg.org/320th_history.html) and a complete [mission list] (http://320thbg.org/320th_missions.html) including several missions on April 15th/16th 1945 against "Jaffe Defenses" - you can download PDFs of the full mission reports including map references, routes to target etc., and the globe icon on the mission list opens a KMZ file of the target location for e.g. Google Earth. The 320th also mounted missions against "Coubre Defenses" on the 16th - Roube Defense Area may be a typo for the same, or possibly other fortifications in the Royan area.
