El Salvador’s history

What book would you guys recommend I read to learn about El Salvador’s history. Recently I realized that I know very little about my home country. Thanks!

Hello! This is by no means my field of expertise, but I can at least point you in the direction of some basic bibliography.

As a very basic intro, you can read the pertinent sections of Tulio Halperin's The Contemporary History of Latin America. Given the centrality of land tenure in El Salvador's history, this excellent summary by a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison might be an excellent place to start.

Once you have a basic lay of the land, check out the pertinent volumes of the massive Cambridge History of Latin America. It has chapters by experts on specific periods/fields, so you can look up which ones touch on Central America generally or El Salvador specifically.

Given the importance of the role of US foreign policy in Central American history, I'd also recommend checking out Walter LaFeber's Inevitable Revolutions: The United States in Central America. It's really useful in part because it also contextualizes US policy in one country within the broader framework of what the US was doing in Central America as a whole.

Hope this helps give you a place to start.

Our book list is thin on El Salvador, but we do have some general Latin American/Central American history: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/wiki/books/americas/latinamerica

I'll see if we can scare up a flaired user or two who might be able to help out.
