In novels by Wodehouse and Compton-Burnett (not to mention film and TV) there is often a head house servant who uses ornate vocabulary and seems generally learned. Is there any historical reality to this, and if so, how did such a person acquire his education?

As a follow-up, what do we know about these people's lives? DId they have their own private lives, or were they "total" servants?
