Is the Rommel myth true?

by detrivorous

There is a commonly debated myth about Erwin Rommel-that he was simply an apolitical and brilliant commander. I've researched this myself and only got more contradictory information. My question is to ask, once and for all: was Rommel a supporter of the Nazis or just a German nationalist?

More can be written about this, but you might like to start by seeing some excellent existing discussions.

"Did the Rommel Myth and Clean Wehrmacht myth (and others) pushed after World War II come from Government level or Academia?" , with an answer by /u/Georgy_K_Zhukov and commiespaceinvader, and sources listed by kieslowskifan (edit: valuable replies, but they were about whitewashing the Wehrmacht in general, not Rommel).

This is not to discourage discussion. Further questions, data, and debate are welcome.
